Phil
and
Marianne Nelson - directors of Help for Orphans & Widows Worldwide
(HOWW), a ministry that feeds and disciples poor children mainly in
Guatemala, Central America.
Phil is a flight attendant for American
Airlines and Marianne is a homemaker.
After raising our three children, God has given us
an open door to the poor children of Guatemala
.
That door was opened as a result of
adopting our two Guatemalan children, Gabriel and Desirée,
who were malnourished and born into dire poverty.
(75%
of the people from that country are below the poverty line.
Possibly 5 million of the children there
may get one meal a day, if even that.)
IIn 2
003
we started feeding children in Desirée’s
biological sister’s poor neighborhood.
Since 2006 the Lord has led us to work with
pastors and leaders from a variety of churches and evangelical
denominations.
We believe the desire of the Lord is not only to
feed these children’s bodies but to provide, along with the food, the
“milk of the Word” to feed their souls and spirits.
We have a 2-year Bible Institute where we
train pastors, and their children and youth workers.
Through God’s continued help and direction,
we have also been developing teaching materials we make available to the
pastors and teachers: 1) A Bible
course to introduce the children
to Christ and teach them the Bible from Genesis through Revelations and
2) A discipleship program that requires of the children daily prayer,
daily Bible reading, Scripture memory and character development, all
emphasizing a Biblical principle on which to build their lives.
